Sunday June 16th: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

St. Francis Parish | June 16, 2019, 11:13 am | Reflections

On this day of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity we are filled with hope and joy through our faith and confidence in The Spirit, received through Jesus from God the Father.  From the Catechism of the Catholic Church 687 “No one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”  In today’s Gospel JN 16:13 Jesus tells His disciples, “But when He comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you to all truth.  He will not speak on his own, but He will speak what He hears”.  The Word of God is far too complex for us to understand.  Let’s establish this truth right away.  Jesus being the Living Word of God is no less beyond our comprehension.  However, by the power of the Spirit, our ears are open to hear, our eyes are open to see and our minds are open to understand that which God is saying to us.
As a Church and by extension a parish, we must realize this need for The Spirit in our lives to “unveil” the Truth of Christ to us.  Only through our understanding are we to grow closer to our Lord.  Only through a strong and healthy relationship with God are we to withstand the temptations of this world that work to draw us away from Him.  It is time that we realize we cannot be the distant sons and daughters who only come around for Christmas and Easter and then expect that on that day when a lawyer reads the will, we will receive a bountiful inheritance.  For on that day it will not be a lawyer, it will be The Lord Himself, passing judgement on each of us and the inheritance to be gained or lost is of an incomprehensibly greater value than worldly treasure.
On this day, let us understand that it is The Trinity, God the Father whose love is revealed by The Son, Jesus, whose truth is revealed to us by The Spirit that binds us to our Lord.  This is the basis of our Faith, beginning with our Baptism.  When we bless ourselves as we enter Mass, in the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit, let us be reminded that through The Trinity, we may also share in His Love.
