Sunday July 14th: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Francis Parish | July 13, 2019, 2:38 pm | Reflections

In today’s Gospel from Luke 10:25-37 we hear again about The Greatest Commandment, in response to a scholar of the law asking what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus responds, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” (LK 10:26)  The scholar “said in reply, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God,…and your neighbor as yourself.'” (LK 10:27)  Jesus goes on to explain our neighbor by telling the Parable of The Good Samaritan.  **Please go back and read today’s Gospel passage before you continue**

Now that you have re-read this, ask yourself, “Who is MY neighbor?”  Is he the guy that lives next door who plays his music too loud or the one who doesn’t keep his yard clean?  It can’t be either of them right?  They drive me crazy!  It must be the lady across the street who bakes cookies at Christmas and shares them with us.  Of course, she’s my neighbor…I like her.  Ok, this may be an exaggeration of how we think but is it?  Think in the parable of what those who passed by the victim saw.  They were not aware of what led to the man’s plight.  They would’ve most likely seen a dirty, battered individual but they did not know he was beaten and robbed.  If we came upon someone similar today it would be easy to dismiss them as an addict of some sort and be lacking any sort of compassion for them whatsoever.  You see brothers and sisters…wait a minute…what did I just say?  How many of you use the same words?  “Brothers and Sisters in Christ.”  The difference here is merely verbiage.  Would we not run to our brother’s aid if he were left naked, bruised and battered in the street?  If we were the victim, what would our prayers be?  Would we not want a stranger to see us as just that?  Their brother or sister?
“And your neighbor as yourself.”  Let us pray on how we would want to be loved?  Now, let us “Go and do likewise.” (LK 10:37)
